So, imagine my happiness when they start showing the dubbed movie at a theater 3 hours away from my home. I came to that movie with hopes and ambitions. I'd seen the screenshots, I'd read some reviews of the movie, and i'd even seen that one of my favorite YouTubers, Nathan Sharp, was a voice actor.
And after sitting through all of the movie, all I have to say is this: If you want an anime movie with fan-service and funny jokes, go right ahead and watch this. But if you came to watch strong, emotional, plot driven moments and character arcs, then you will be disappointed.

Erza Scarlet. She is in my top 3 favorite characters. She is kind but fierce, strong but merciful, wise and intelligent, badass, and still funny and entertaining. She is one of the strongest mages in the anime in my opinion, her power is almost limitless. I started watching this anime when I was pretty young (which probably wasn't a very good idea because I was still innocent) but she helped me grow confident in myself because as silly as it sounds she taught me when to show mercy, when to fight for what you believe in. But when she was displayed in this movie, it was like she was slightly strong but mostly there for the sex appeal. Her true strength wasn't shown at all.
Wendy Marvell. She was another one of my heroes. Being young like me I kind of looked up to her. In the Tartaros Arc, Wendy finally got her Dragon Force. This. Makes. Her. So. Very. Badass. She is now supposed to be very strong. However, she did go into her Dragon Force, but it was a horrible representation. She got little to no screen time, and she did not show her real strength! Charla, her white exceed. Turned into some sexy cat girl. Charla was supposed to 'help Wendy fight' but we saw nothing of what Charla can do in that form. It was purely for sex appeal.
Gajeel Redfox. All I have to say is, he is a very powerful Dragon Slayer as well, but he literally didn't do any magic. Not even turn his arms into Iron.
Dragon Slayers. None. Of. Them. Even. Roared. That is like a trademark of the Dragon slayers, their roars. None of them even did it.
Don't get me wrong, seeing Natsu go into Dragon Form was cool, but honestly it could have been infinitely better. Natsu didn't do any magic in that form, he just threw punches. He got little to no screen time in that form either.
The Fights, were executed horribly, I am disgusted. And what made me fall in love with Fairy Tail is the whole, 'fight for your comrades' 'teamwork' 'sacrifice' aspect. When they were 'shown' it was a weak display. What I saw as the core values of Fairy Tail, were shown horribly.
Save your time and money from this movie. It isn't worth it. You are better off just sticking to the manga and the anime. I was so ashamed that I showed this to my father and he believed that I loved this anime, I apologized to him profusely and to redeem myself I am showing him the GmG arc. It is a good display of the anime and they fights. This anime started with little to no fan service, and it was all about teamwork and getting strong as a team. To see this movie to be 90% fan service disgusts me. The movie, 10% fights, 5% Core Values, 85% Fanservice.

This movie follows right into the shoes of its source material. To start off, this movie was promised to take place AFTER the events of the manga, servicing as a climax to the series in the same manners as 'The Last: Naruto the Movie' was to the Naruto manga. This is quickly dashed to pieces as it apparently takes place after the events of the Tartaros arc. So already we can tell that we're being lied to by the author himself, Hiro Mashima.. not that being deceived by him isn't already common occurrence after the many times we were suckered into his horrible changes.
The plot itself is also basically a rehash of the last movie: An evil ruler of a newly introduced kingdom steals an ancient artifact of great power that he wants to use to take over the world; introducing King Animus as the Prince Cream and Sonya as the Éclair of this movie. There is, like in the manga, no originality in the story or characters. It's really a by-the-numbers Fairy Tail production with nothing you haven't seen before. The only difference: the budget is MUCH larger and the animation is nicer.. what a waste of time and money.
The action is as simplistic and typically Fairy Tail as well, giving us the exact same formula of 'good guy gets really beaten up but then believes in his friends and 1-shot the much more powerful enemy' that the series is infamous about. While we do get to see the highly hyped up Natsu as a semi-dragon it doesn't excuse the sloppy and boring action that FT has to offer on a constant basis.
The biggest difference Fairy Tail has with other series of its genre is the overuse of fan service. Whereas most Shonen have fan service but don't let it overstay its welcome, Fairy Tail actively tries to make itself appear like a soft-core hentai or unabashed ecchi. From Lucy using her weak sex appeal to get her wishes (contradictory to what her claims that she doesn't like doing this) to Erza being unfazed of being naked in front of anyone (save for Jellal) to the pathetic pandering of bathroom/sauna scenes, Fairy Tail has made a name for itself as the most depraved Shonen there is. Dragon Cry's promotional material and trailers all seemed to bash this into our heads by showing it's main character, Lucy Heartfilia, in seductive belly-dancer clothing, clothing she wears throughout a large portion of the movie.. all to keep the viewer invested in seeing her for exactly what she is: a tool. I'm not going to act like fan service isn't allowed in Shonen but it has to make sense and be but a small distraction from serious or during comedic moments.. not take up over 30% of the material. Fairy Tail's biggest fans only come to see half or fully naked 2D animated characters being put in situations of embarrassment, only to salivate over it like depraved horny mongrels.
Fairy Tail's strongest point, which the manga lacks obviously, is the anime's musical score. Music has always been a thing Fairy Tail does surprisingly right, giving us upbeat and sinister orchestral to soft and soothing scores. So as much as the movie is dull and boring, if you close your eyes and just listen then you might catch some good music every now and then when the characters aren't speaking. If that doesn't do it for you, refrain from wasting money on this movie and just buy/download the OST of it and enjoy what little good it has to offer.
In conclusion, not that it comes to anyone's surprise, this movie is purely a waste of time, effort and money. Hiro Mashima was stated to have written the script and story of this movie and it blatantly shows. It has everything good and bad, especially bad, that the worst of Shonen has to offer. I would tell its fans to not waste their time watching it but I know that would be as much a waste of effort as everything else. So to them I say: this is exactly what you're used to, only with nicer animation and a longer running time.. enjoy your garbage!
To anyone new to the series or movie: Go waste your money on something else.
And to those who massively downvote this review: the only reason you're doing it is because you're too salty to realize I'm right. Goes to show how much of a hypocritical fanbase FT really has if the fans cannot even tolerate other people's opinions. People even write reviews like Youtube comments to respond to other reviews they dislike.. truly pathetic, but not unexpected for Fairy Tail fans.

For anyone who has yet to see the film, this will be a heads-up, not a spoiler: while it is never explained, the film is technically canon, taking place right after the Avatar arc and before the Alvarez Empire arc. Keeping that in mind, there will be moments that leave you confused had you not read the manga. I advise you to look into the Avatar arc prior to watching the film.
Personally, the film was a nice way to fill in the gap between Fairy Tail's end in 2016 to get fans hyped up for the final season set to arrive 2018. So I will admit this, I did enjoy Dragon Cry more than Phoenix Priestess, but only by a little. There seemed to be more 3D implemented in some shots, but the animation feels more realistic and cinematic, versus Phoenix Priestess' where the animation is cheesy and ridiculous. I also think Dragon Cry had a nice flow of consistency within the story line, even if it felt like an extended episode, whereas Phoenix Priestess was treated more as a spin-off, and it's not even canon, although people have said it fits best after the Key of the Starry Sky arc.
Of course, there are still cons to this film, as it is the case for everything. A lot of the Fairy Tail characters were thrown into the film for no exact reason, much to my dismay. I'm still wondering why Gajeel, Pantherlily and Levy were there in the first place. There also seems to be quite more sex appeal compared to the episodes, or barely enough development in the characters. Lucy dancing or Carla in her human form or Erza hardly showing her true strength as an S-Class wizard, or a lack of traditional trademarks of certain characters (I won't say who). At least there weren't as many unnecessary characters as Phoenix Priestess.
What's more is that the film felt rather choppy, but whether it's from poor editing or poor directing is hard to say. Even so, it definitely felt rushed, almost as if the creative team was falling behind on schedule in making the film. What I also miss from the series that the film lacked is because of a lack of development, there isn't enough emotion or heart in the characters to actually give them any push or strength. The fact that this is cut down into around 90 minutes, versus having 20 23-minute episodes to make a complete arc.
Additionally, I was hoping that Dragon Cry's story would offer more piqued interest for fans, only to learn that it felt too familiar, though I will not reveal what made it so cliché. Even the promotional trailers suggested we might learn of Natsu's dragon instincts coming to life, but that's only marketing tactics, and you have to be careful about what you reveal. I actually thought we might learn a little more about Natsu's backstory, but I think we know enough already about our Fire Dragon Slayer. It does set up nicely for the Fairy Tail finale, but we still have a while to wait before hitting the screens.
Overall, Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry felt more like a Hollywood film with a lack in strong characters, overuse of unnecessary things and low use of development. It felt like watching 'Spectre' of the James Bond films, how it shows us what we already know about the series. I think I could have given a lower rating according to my review, having a bit more cons than pros. However, I found it to be enough entertainment to emphasize how much I enjoy Fairy Tail not just as a fan, but especially as someone who can relate to the characters.
So is it worth watching? I can't be the judge and speak for the majority, but what I can say is that I think my seven bucks were well spent. Besides, who doesn't get goosebumps listening to Yasuharu Takanashi's theme song during the climax?

Plot holes for everyone! Seriously it was like a mine field! Suddenly characters appear from absolutely no where, do you know where those dragon forms came from? Well neither do I, last time Wendy got hers was from eating super charged air, pretty sure there wasn't any of that just lying around for no good reason. But so what, a few things happened, it doesn't make it horrible. Well no. But when those problems are combined with the others, holey mother of satin we have a monster! I am so glad I watched a free version, I feel terrible for everyone who had to pay for this utter crap. There are millions of words to describe this movie but none of them are nice. This movie makes Donald Trump look nice, at least he isn't running around dressed in clothes that could have been made out of three postage stamps and some fishing line. Thank the lord he doesn't. Damn me if I say it but I was one of those diehard fans, I would have defend Fairy Tail until the day I was pushing up daisies, but now I am ashamed to even be considered a viewer. If only someone had warned me to abandon this sinking boat before it sunk, then at least my memerories of friendship, strength and courged, struggling for the better and humor wouldn't be tainted by this abomination called Dragon Cry.

As a result of this, I can only assume they have skipped an arc to make this film, as the last episode of Fairy Tail showed everyone was scattered after the guild was disbanded.
Now all of a sudden, everyone is back together with no explanation. The dissolution isn't ever even mentioned, even though it is clearly set after the series due to Gray's Demon Slayer form showing up.But I could sort of forgive that if we just had an explanation for some of the stuff that happened in the film, but it treats the viewer as though they are an expert on what I assume is in the manga.
Carla can suddenly become a human?
Lucy now receives gear to equip for herself when she summons her spirits?
Natsu is now not only a dragon-slayer, but also half-dragon? And he is also this E.N.D that we have been hearing about for the whole series?
What?
I have such fond memories of the series, but this film left me with such a sour taste in my mouth. Apparently the series is getting a final run of episodes sometime this year. I really hope that they return to the formular that I used to enjoy so much and actually explains some of the random stuff that was just shoved into this film.
The story to this film was so weak, that it hardly bears mentioning next to the questions that it left me with.
Some of the fight scenes were just about Ok, but they are nothing compared to the ones from the main series.
None of the characters feel like their series versions. Instead they are just cardboard cutouts used as stand-ins. The main theme of the show around friendship and teamwork is completely absent here. The only part that has any semblance of their series counterparts is during the beginning when they need to retrieve the ring stealthily in the bar and they are actually using teamwork.
Gajeel, Patherlily, Juvia and Levy are also in the film, but they never actually do anything (with the exception of Juvia who helps with one battle). The time taken up by these characters would have been much better spent on strengthening the main story.
All in all, unless the final series requires you to watch this to understand the next storyline, give it a miss for your own sanity.
