Warning: Spoilers
This was the biggest disappointment in film industry whether it's anime or other types of films. And this is coming from a fan who liked the other Fairy Tail films. I just don't understand how this was allowed to be made. I'm not trying to be rude but why would you so obviously cut scenes out and expect the viewer to just figure out how the character suddenly changed location or fill in the gaps? And how can you make basically the boss battle 1 min 30 secs?? This is beyond anti climatic. It just makes their motivation to win rushed and cringy. I have such a long list of amateurish flaws that I don't even know what to say next so I'm just going to stop here and warn anyone that is looking forward to watch this film: Don't. Stick to the manga.

The Phoenix Mistake
briggnalle2 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a good fan of Fairy Tial. I loved the anime series because they were quirky, different, and just plain enjoyable. A good run of seasons had passed, and then 'The Phoenix Priestess' came out. As a rushed movie, the entire film flopped and just plain sucked. The plot had been rushed, many situations made little to no sense and the characters that you loved in the anime just aren't there in the movie. They are just cardboard cutouts and the villains and climax was just.. ugh. What does this have to do with Dragon Cry? Why do I call it 'The Phoenix Mistake'? Because when they were making this story and the movie, they were given a bigger budget and had a huge enough fanbase to back it up. And they completely and utterly flopped it.The entire course of the film is choppy and makes absolutely no sense. The plot is simple: magical artifact stolen, get back magical item, kick butt, lesson learned. Unfortunately, the whole scenario is completely thrown into a blender and mixed into 'overdrive'. There is little to no character development or deep meaning in anything they do. I love the Fairy Tail guild, but I just didnt find anything worth caring about these characters. All the women were literally just fan service and the men were just plain simple and stupid cutout's.You will also be lost with each and every setting change in the entire film. Characters appear out of nowhere with no explanation as to how or why, the plot is rushed without any explanation as to how anything works or should be, and we are given so many questions with absolutely no answers. The bad guys are just plain confusing and unoriginal, and the fights.. dear God the fights are either too short, or just plain lame. There is no signature fighting moves and when introduced to something new (as shown on the cover) we are given no explanation as to how or why it happened. The only thing I can really congratulate this film on was its beauty. We are talking like original animation with beautiful artwork. It's literally the only thing keeping this burning ship afloat aside from any die-hard fans who refuse to see anything wrong with it. Dragon Cry is just a sad cardboard cutout plot with cardboard characters with escalated fan service with logic literally having bricks tied to its ankles before getting tossed in the river. It is a complete disaster that makes even the Phoenix Priestess a decent movie. Take it from me: you are better off watching the anime or reading the manga. Niether of the Fairy Tail films offer anything to the entire story, nor does it apply any value to your life whether you are a die-hard fan or otherwise. This movie, is absolutely garbage, and as a Fairy Tail Fan, I am willing to save all others the pain and tell you to skip this film. Avoid it like the black plague, and forget it ever existed.

Barely any plot development
cinnacommisions21 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I am a long time fan of the series, watching the show since its second season came out. I've watched and supported the adventures of the cast, owning the disc sets of the episodes, owning the first movie and lots of merchandise.
So, imagine my happiness when they start showing the dubbed movie at a theater 3 hours away from my home. I came to that movie with hopes and ambitions. I'd seen the screenshots, I'd read some reviews of the movie, and i'd even seen that one of my favorite YouTubers, Nathan Sharp, was a voice actor.
And after sitting through all of the movie, all I have to say is this: If you want an anime movie with fan-service and funny jokes, go right ahead and watch this. But if you came to watch strong, emotional, plot driven moments and character arcs, then you will be disappointed.

Dissapointing

I feel like who ever directed this movie just everyone to see how well they can sexualise everything, to add onto this, it has more plot holes than a sponge called plot, if you want to watch, do not pay the price to see it

Very disappointing
rachelauyeung31 August 2017
It's completely a film for kid. Been a Fairy Tail reader for a few years so I bothered to actually watch this movie in theatre but I regret to say I am very much disappointed after watching this movie. The whole story is just too simple and naive. It's a shame that this shitty movie was written by the author Hiro Mashima himself. Expected more of it.

As a fan that has watched all of the episodes and read a lot of the manga, I'm disappointed.
lilypadgrkkat14 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Im truly and utterly disappointed not only with this movie, but with Hiro Mashima himself. I have put so much time, money, and energy into my love for Fairy Tail. I have merchandise, and I am currently slaving away making a Minecraft Server based off of it. My family knows how much I love Fairy Tail. So my dad came to me today, all excited telling me he has found out about the new movie and he wanted to take me to see it. I, being a huge fan was squealing with excitement. To my horror, this is what I found out.
Erza Scarlet. She is in my top 3 favorite characters. She is kind but fierce, strong but merciful, wise and intelligent, badass, and still funny and entertaining. She is one of the strongest mages in the anime in my opinion, her power is almost limitless. I started watching this anime when I was pretty young (which probably wasn't a very good idea because I was still innocent) but she helped me grow confident in myself because as silly as it sounds she taught me when to show mercy, when to fight for what you believe in. But when she was displayed in this movie, it was like she was slightly strong but mostly there for the sex appeal. Her true strength wasn't shown at all.
Wendy Marvell. She was another one of my heroes. Being young like me I kind of looked up to her. In the Tartaros Arc, Wendy finally got her Dragon Force. This. Makes. Her. So. Very. Badass. She is now supposed to be very strong. However, she did go into her Dragon Force, but it was a horrible representation. She got little to no screen time, and she did not show her real strength! Charla, her white exceed. Turned into some sexy cat girl. Charla was supposed to 'help Wendy fight' but we saw nothing of what Charla can do in that form. It was purely for sex appeal.
Gajeel Redfox. All I have to say is, he is a very powerful Dragon Slayer as well, but he literally didn't do any magic. Not even turn his arms into Iron.
Dragon Slayers. None. Of. Them. Even. Roared. That is like a trademark of the Dragon slayers, their roars. None of them even did it.
Don't get me wrong, seeing Natsu go into Dragon Form was cool, but honestly it could have been infinitely better. Natsu didn't do any magic in that form, he just threw punches. He got little to no screen time in that form either.
The Fights, were executed horribly, I am disgusted. And what made me fall in love with Fairy Tail is the whole, 'fight for your comrades' 'teamwork' 'sacrifice' aspect. When they were 'shown' it was a weak display. What I saw as the core values of Fairy Tail, were shown horribly.
Save your time and money from this movie. It isn't worth it. You are better off just sticking to the manga and the anime. I was so ashamed that I showed this to my father and he believed that I loved this anime, I apologized to him profusely and to redeem myself I am showing him the GmG arc. It is a good display of the anime and they fights. This anime started with little to no fan service, and it was all about teamwork and getting strong as a team. To see this movie to be 90% fan service disgusts me. The movie, 10% fights, 5% Core Values, 85% Fanservice.

I can't believe this nonsense (Spoilers)
rdevyatka5 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a fan, I stopped reading the manga so I wouldn't be spoiled watching the animé. I was very disappointed after it was all over. It was like they cut and pasted fairy tail episodes to make this movie. Hear what the post credit scenes was better than the entire movie. So skip to that you won't be missing anything special. What a waste of 1hr 25minutes.

Following into the downward spiral of the manga it's based on..
kiryuthedragon19 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not gonna sugarcoat it: Fairy Tail is easily the worst example of its genre, Shonen, that there is.. and it's BAD! From it's terrible execution of fights to overuse of fan service, from the nonsensical character motivation to the plot induced stupidity and shark-jumping, from its clichéd and obnoxious characters and its overuse of friendship speeches that replace meaningful dialogue, Fairy Tail as a whole is just garbage. Only the greatest numb-skulls love this train wreck and even then most don't even watch it for anything else but the love affairs (shipping) that really aren't the focus of the series in the first or last place.
This movie follows right into the shoes of its source material. To start off, this movie was promised to take place AFTER the events of the manga, servicing as a climax to the series in the same manners as 'The Last: Naruto the Movie' was to the Naruto manga. This is quickly dashed to pieces as it apparently takes place after the events of the Tartaros arc. So already we can tell that we're being lied to by the author himself, Hiro Mashima.. not that being deceived by him isn't already common occurrence after the many times we were suckered into his horrible changes.
The plot itself is also basically a rehash of the last movie: An evil ruler of a newly introduced kingdom steals an ancient artifact of great power that he wants to use to take over the world; introducing King Animus as the Prince Cream and Sonya as the Éclair of this movie. There is, like in the manga, no originality in the story or characters. It's really a by-the-numbers Fairy Tail production with nothing you haven't seen before. The only difference: the budget is MUCH larger and the animation is nicer.. what a waste of time and money.
The action is as simplistic and typically Fairy Tail as well, giving us the exact same formula of 'good guy gets really beaten up but then believes in his friends and 1-shot the much more powerful enemy' that the series is infamous about. While we do get to see the highly hyped up Natsu as a semi-dragon it doesn't excuse the sloppy and boring action that FT has to offer on a constant basis.
The biggest difference Fairy Tail has with other series of its genre is the overuse of fan service. Whereas most Shonen have fan service but don't let it overstay its welcome, Fairy Tail actively tries to make itself appear like a soft-core hentai or unabashed ecchi. From Lucy using her weak sex appeal to get her wishes (contradictory to what her claims that she doesn't like doing this) to Erza being unfazed of being naked in front of anyone (save for Jellal) to the pathetic pandering of bathroom/sauna scenes, Fairy Tail has made a name for itself as the most depraved Shonen there is. Dragon Cry's promotional material and trailers all seemed to bash this into our heads by showing it's main character, Lucy Heartfilia, in seductive belly-dancer clothing, clothing she wears throughout a large portion of the movie.. all to keep the viewer invested in seeing her for exactly what she is: a tool. I'm not going to act like fan service isn't allowed in Shonen but it has to make sense and be but a small distraction from serious or during comedic moments.. not take up over 30% of the material. Fairy Tail's biggest fans only come to see half or fully naked 2D animated characters being put in situations of embarrassment, only to salivate over it like depraved horny mongrels.
Fairy Tail's strongest point, which the manga lacks obviously, is the anime's musical score. Music has always been a thing Fairy Tail does surprisingly right, giving us upbeat and sinister orchestral to soft and soothing scores. So as much as the movie is dull and boring, if you close your eyes and just listen then you might catch some good music every now and then when the characters aren't speaking. If that doesn't do it for you, refrain from wasting money on this movie and just buy/download the OST of it and enjoy what little good it has to offer.
In conclusion, not that it comes to anyone's surprise, this movie is purely a waste of time, effort and money. Hiro Mashima was stated to have written the script and story of this movie and it blatantly shows. It has everything good and bad, especially bad, that the worst of Shonen has to offer. I would tell its fans to not waste their time watching it but I know that would be as much a waste of effort as everything else. So to them I say: this is exactly what you're used to, only with nicer animation and a longer running time.. enjoy your garbage!
To anyone new to the series or movie: Go waste your money on something else.
And to those who massively downvote this review: the only reason you're doing it is because you're too salty to realize I'm right. Goes to show how much of a hypocritical fanbase FT really has if the fans cannot even tolerate other people's opinions. People even write reviews like Youtube comments to respond to other reviews they dislike.. truly pathetic, but not unexpected for Fairy Tail fans.

Dragon Cry: A formulaic but entertaining spectacle
elijahyang19 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A confession from me, I only got attached to Fairy Tail for less than a year, but it is undoubtedly one of my favorite anime of all time. That being said, I returned watching the English dub of Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry, and it was entertaining enough that reminded me how much Fairy Tail means to us, despite having a rather formulaic plot, excessive use of sex appeal and under-developed characters.
For anyone who has yet to see the film, this will be a heads-up, not a spoiler: while it is never explained, the film is technically canon, taking place right after the Avatar arc and before the Alvarez Empire arc. Keeping that in mind, there will be moments that leave you confused had you not read the manga. I advise you to look into the Avatar arc prior to watching the film.
Personally, the film was a nice way to fill in the gap between Fairy Tail's end in 2016 to get fans hyped up for the final season set to arrive 2018. So I will admit this, I did enjoy Dragon Cry more than Phoenix Priestess, but only by a little. There seemed to be more 3D implemented in some shots, but the animation feels more realistic and cinematic, versus Phoenix Priestess' where the animation is cheesy and ridiculous. I also think Dragon Cry had a nice flow of consistency within the story line, even if it felt like an extended episode, whereas Phoenix Priestess was treated more as a spin-off, and it's not even canon, although people have said it fits best after the Key of the Starry Sky arc.
Of course, there are still cons to this film, as it is the case for everything. A lot of the Fairy Tail characters were thrown into the film for no exact reason, much to my dismay. I'm still wondering why Gajeel, Pantherlily and Levy were there in the first place. There also seems to be quite more sex appeal compared to the episodes, or barely enough development in the characters. Lucy dancing or Carla in her human form or Erza hardly showing her true strength as an S-Class wizard, or a lack of traditional trademarks of certain characters (I won't say who). At least there weren't as many unnecessary characters as Phoenix Priestess.
What's more is that the film felt rather choppy, but whether it's from poor editing or poor directing is hard to say. Even so, it definitely felt rushed, almost as if the creative team was falling behind on schedule in making the film. What I also miss from the series that the film lacked is because of a lack of development, there isn't enough emotion or heart in the characters to actually give them any push or strength. The fact that this is cut down into around 90 minutes, versus having 20 23-minute episodes to make a complete arc.
Additionally, I was hoping that Dragon Cry's story would offer more piqued interest for fans, only to learn that it felt too familiar, though I will not reveal what made it so cliché. Even the promotional trailers suggested we might learn of Natsu's dragon instincts coming to life, but that's only marketing tactics, and you have to be careful about what you reveal. I actually thought we might learn a little more about Natsu's backstory, but I think we know enough already about our Fire Dragon Slayer. It does set up nicely for the Fairy Tail finale, but we still have a while to wait before hitting the screens.
Overall, Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry felt more like a Hollywood film with a lack in strong characters, overuse of unnecessary things and low use of development. It felt like watching 'Spectre' of the James Bond films, how it shows us what we already know about the series. I think I could have given a lower rating according to my review, having a bit more cons than pros. However, I found it to be enough entertainment to emphasize how much I enjoy Fairy Tail not just as a fan, but especially as someone who can relate to the characters.
So is it worth watching? I can't be the judge and speak for the majority, but what I can say is that I think my seven bucks were well spent. Besides, who doesn't get goosebumps listening to Yasuharu Takanashi's theme song during the climax?

Pure sex appealWarning: Spoilers
Did we really need that shot of Erza's legs while she is running in that skimpy outfit? I don't see what we gain from Lucy's belly damceing outfit. Hands up if you enjoyed cat-girl-carla, the completely unexplained not-so-much-a-friend? Round of applause, you've done it again, manged to ruin what could be good with fan service for the horny. I was massive fairy tail fan before the ravaging armies of sex driven cash bags took up all the 'inspiration' sources. Pity they couldn't see their potential until they executed it and shoved it in a plot hole, another thing this movie was great at.
Plot holes for everyone! Seriously it was like a mine field! Suddenly characters appear from absolutely no where, do you know where those dragon forms came from? Well neither do I, last time Wendy got hers was from eating super charged air, pretty sure there wasn't any of that just lying around for no good reason. But so what, a few things happened, it doesn't make it horrible. Well no. But when those problems are combined with the others, holey mother of satin we have a monster! I am so glad I watched a free version, I feel terrible for everyone who had to pay for this utter crap. There are millions of words to describe this movie but none of them are nice. This movie makes Donald Trump look nice, at least he isn't running around dressed in clothes that could have been made out of three postage stamps and some fishing line. Thank the lord he doesn't. Damn me if I say it but I was one of those diehard fans, I would have defend Fairy Tail until the day I was pushing up daisies, but now I am ashamed to even be considered a viewer. If only someone had warned me to abandon this sinking boat before it sunk, then at least my memerories of friendship, strength and courged, struggling for the better and humor wouldn't be tainted by this abomination called Dragon Cry.

From a fan to a critic
I honestly love fairy tail, it was the first anime I had ever watched and over the years I spent watching it I could never see the fact that the ended to it legacy would be..this. I finished the anime last year, then I read half the manga, but as soon as I watched this movie, it left such a sour taste in my mouth I just couldn't keep going. So much hype for so little love. This really shows how much time I've spent only to be dissapointed.

Wait, what?
MrChr1517 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I have been a huge fan of the series for a long time, but I have never read any of the manga.
As a result of this, I can only assume they have skipped an arc to make this film, as the last episode of Fairy Tail showed everyone was scattered after the guild was disbanded.
Now all of a sudden, everyone is back together with no explanation. The dissolution isn't ever even mentioned, even though it is clearly set after the series due to Gray's Demon Slayer form showing up.But I could sort of forgive that if we just had an explanation for some of the stuff that happened in the film, but it treats the viewer as though they are an expert on what I assume is in the manga.
Carla can suddenly become a human?
Lucy now receives gear to equip for herself when she summons her spirits?
Natsu is now not only a dragon-slayer, but also half-dragon? And he is also this E.N.D that we have been hearing about for the whole series?
What?
I have such fond memories of the series, but this film left me with such a sour taste in my mouth. Apparently the series is getting a final run of episodes sometime this year. I really hope that they return to the formular that I used to enjoy so much and actually explains some of the random stuff that was just shoved into this film.
The story to this film was so weak, that it hardly bears mentioning next to the questions that it left me with.
Some of the fight scenes were just about Ok, but they are nothing compared to the ones from the main series.
None of the characters feel like their series versions. Instead they are just cardboard cutouts used as stand-ins. The main theme of the show around friendship and teamwork is completely absent here. The only part that has any semblance of their series counterparts is during the beginning when they need to retrieve the ring stealthily in the bar and they are actually using teamwork.
Gajeel, Patherlily, Juvia and Levy are also in the film, but they never actually do anything (with the exception of Juvia who helps with one battle). The time taken up by these characters would have been much better spent on strengthening the main story.
All in all, unless the final series requires you to watch this to understand the next storyline, give it a miss for your own sanity.
